On Illumination
In powerhouse writing, the big goal is almost always to leave your audience affected by what they have read. In the words of writer Pamela Painter, “a story is a journey that begins in one place and ends in illumination someplace else.”
How do writers send their characters and readers to that someplace? I’m no expert. But for my Short Story Incubator class with Grub Street in 2025, I put together a presentation on how I thought some writers get us there.
