Choose Curiosity Over a Coping Mechanism

Have you ever stopped and chosen curiosity over a coping mechanism?

My shit got rocked this weekend.

I experienced some of the most intense (if not the most intense) emotions of my entire life.

If you've known me for a while my mantra is always "feel your feelings."

Let emotions rise and fall like waves in the ocean.

What I seemed to have forgotten is that our emotions contain so many messages to us that we often ignore, because we never stop to ask what the root of the emotion is or where it stems from.

This gets especially convoluted in the spiritual community - we are taught to practice gratitude, appreciation and to "look on the bright side."

The result of that is the constant converting of the uncomfortable or painful emotions through an army of coping mechanisms.

I think we have missed the whole point of our uncomfortable emotions entirely.

Our emotions are our own internal guidance system.

While we may feel better using coping mechanisms - we miss out on the profound information our emotions are trying to convey to us.

How many times have you felt sad or angry or uncomfortable or upset and then just used a coping mechanism to feel better?

Have you ever stopped and chosen curiosity over a coping mechanism?

I often use the logic that "this too shall pass" and then throw myself head first into my coping mechanisms to live through yet another day.

All while not changing and missing the information my emotions were trying to tell me all along.

Have you stopped to take a moment to recognize that the uncomfortable emotion you are feeling might be trying to get you to pay attention to something in your life that needs to change?

I invite each of you to get curious about the deeper meaning behind your emotions and what exactly emotions are alerting you to and trying to get you to pay attention to.

We don't feel things for no reason.

Curiosity is the name of the game.

By being present with myself and exploring what my emotions meant this weekend I walked away with a profound clarity I don't know I would have discovered otherwise if I had chosen to stuff down my feelings and ignore them or choose to make them mean nothing.

Your feelings mean something.

It's up to you to figure out what.

Good luck.
